A national day of action against the rising cost of living on Oct. 17 turned into looting and arson in many French cities. About 550,000 people joined the demonstrations, according to the Interior Ministry; 2,397 people were detained and 997 police officers and gendarmes were injured. The tower of Limoges’ 143-year-old town hall collapsed in flames, luxury stores were looted in Paris, and Palestinian flags were raised at some rallies. In an address to the nation, President Macron said the looters would pay. The gallery features photos and videos from the scene.
