The Deposit Return System (DOA), run by the Turkish Environment Agency (TÜÇA) under the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, has quickly brought millions of containers into the recycling chain. With the system now implemented nationwide, citizens receive incentive payments while the recycling rate is targeted to increase.
18.7 Million Containers Collected in 10 Days
The DOA system, which entered its national integration phase on July 1, has been rolled out in 81 provinces and 973 districts. In the first 10 days, 18,775,861 plastic, glass, and aluminum beverage containers were returned to the system. During the same period, the number of registered users rose to 1,992,006.
1 Lira Incentive per Container
Citizens who deposit plastic, glass, and aluminum beverage containers bearing the DOA logo into reverse vending machines or manual drop-off points receive a 1-lira incentive for each eligible container. After the return, the incentive amount is transferred to the digital wallet in the DOA mobile app.
Support for Businesses
Under the mandatory scheme, hotels, restaurants, and cafes must complete their registration in the Deposit Information Management System (DBYS) by the end of October. The DOA-logoed containers collected at registered businesses will be regularly picked up by authorized field operators. Businesses will receive a 20-kuruş incentive for each container returned to the system.
Administrative action will be taken against businesses that fail to meet their obligations by the deadline.
Target: 25 Billion Containers Annually
The DOA system aims to recover the roughly 25 billion beverage containers placed on the Turkish market each year. Once the system reaches full capacity, it is expected to contribute 30 billion lira annually to the economy, while the recovery rate is targeted to reach 50 percent initially and eventually 80 percent. In the long term, the system is also projected to create employment for 20,000 people.
