The longlist for the 2026 Booker Prize has been announced. From 163 entries, 13 novels have been selected, all published in English in England or Ireland between October 2025 and September 2026.
The list includes writers from England, Ireland, Scotland, Jamaica, Mexico, Turkey and the United States. Three authors are nominated with their debut novels, while some names have previously won major literary awards or have advanced to the final stages of the Booker Prize.
One of this year's notable nominees is 81-year-old English writer M. John Harrison. With his novel 'The End of Everything' on the list, if he wins, Harrison will become the oldest winner in Booker history. The current record belongs to Canadian writer Margaret Atwood, who won at age 79 in 2019 for 'The Testaments'. Harrison also served on the Booker jury in 2022.
Jury chair, writer and historian Mary Beard, stated that the longlist brings together very different works ranging from humor to history, science fiction to family drama, and harsh realism to mystery. Beard said, 'All these novels have the power to take the reader to new places and see the world from different perspectives.'
The shortlist will be announced at an event in London on September 22. The winner will be revealed on November 9. The prize winner will receive £50,000 (approximately $64,000).
The Booker Prize is awarded to novels published in English in the UK or Ireland, regardless of the author's nationality, and is regarded as one of the most prestigious literary awards in the world.
