Algeria’s Ministry of Defense announced that two NATO warships had docked at Oran Port on the country’s western coast. The visit is taking place as part of military cooperation.
According to the ministry, the ships are the Greek frigate HS Kontouriotis and the Italian cruiser ITS Montecuccoli. They will remain at Oran Port, which is part of Algeria’s Second Military Region, from Sunday through Wednesday.
Cooperation talks at the naval base
The commanders of the two ships and their accompanying delegations visited the commander of Mers el-Kebir Main Naval Base in the Second Military Region. The talks addressed ways to develop military cooperation and strengthen bilateral relations.
Mers el-Kebir, located on the coast of Oran, is described as Algeria’s largest naval base. The base lies on the country’s western coast, in an area bordering Morocco.
Exercise between Algeria and NATO navies
The Algerian Navy will conduct a Basiks-type exercise with the NATO naval forces of Greece and Italy. The maritime surveillance exercise is intended to contribute to sharing experience and strengthening cooperation.
The Basiks exercise is conducted as a maritime maneuver focused on maritime surveillance activities. Algeria has previously held similar exercises with NATO countries in the Mediterranean.
