Security forces continue to take comprehensive measures in Ankara as part of preparations for the NATO summit to be held on 7-8 July. The Provincial Security Directorate activated a special plan called Operation Turquoise.
Officials reported that the number of checkpoints at entrances and exits to the capital has been significantly increased. Patrol and preventive activities have also been intensified in nine districts.
Additional police units have been deployed on a 24-hour basis in designated areas of responsibility to ensure the safety of summit participants. Inspections of suspicious persons and vehicles are ongoing. Special operations teams, Yunus motorcycle units, narcotics crime units and plainclothes personnel are on duty along critical routes.
Special attention is being given to hotels and service sector businesses that will host numerous foreign delegations and tourists during the summit days. Inspections against street begging, fraud and illegal brokerage activities have also been increased.
As part of the operation, special efforts are being carried out province-wide to apprehend individuals who have been wanted for a long time. The suspects who were captured have been handed over to correctional facilities.
According to information from the Ankara Governor's Office and the Security Directorate, Ankara Police Chief Maksut Yüksek personally inspected the implementation of security measures. He issued instructions for more frequent checks in crowded areas, parks, shopping and entertainment centres, cafes and other public spaces.
During the summit preparation process, inspections have so far been carried out at 215 checkpoints, 151 parks and 120 businesses. A total of 39 teams and 450 police officers took part in the operations.
Furthermore, 209 suspects were detained in efforts to detect and prevent the activities of terrorist organisations. Investigative procedures regarding these suspects are ongoing.
