Galatasaray's Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Sara made important statements at the team's training camp in Austria for the new season preparations. Sara said he dreams of playing in the English Premier League but is now fully focused on Galatasaray.
Transfer Rumours and Premier League Dream
The 27-year-old midfielder, touching on the transfer rumours that emerged at the end of the season, said, "Crazy things can happen on social media. Things like 'I was going to leave at the end of the season but I got injured' can come up. Even when nothing had reached the club side, such things could be said." Regarding his Premier League goal, he added, "I have a dream of playing in the English Premier League. There is a time and place for that. I am very happy where I am. We want to achieve good things at Galatasaray. We want to win the Trendyol Süper Lig for the fifth consecutive time. In the UEFA Champions League, perhaps we will go to even better places. Right now, I am fully focused on Galatasaray. When the time and place comes, if it is beneficial for the club, that situation will be considered."
Working with Okan Buruk
Speaking about head coach Okan Buruk, Sara said, "Okan Buruk is very experienced. Since he previously played as a footballer at this club, he knows how things work. I enjoy working with him." The Brazilian player added that he can play in any position on the field, "I think I can produce better things in the number 8 position. I am more accustomed to that position, I feel more comfortable. If my coach wants, I'll play in the number 10 position as well. If my coach wants, I'll even play as a centre-back. Because I enjoy being on the pitch."
Champions League Performance
Reflecting on being named player of the match in the 5-2 win against Juventus in the UEFA Champions League last season, Sara said, "At that time, my dream came true. I had always dreamed of playing in the Champions League. Being named man of the match in a Champions League game is a very special feeling. I would like to experience more matches like that." The star player also admitted he was not entirely satisfied with his performance, "Actually, I was not very happy with my performance. There were many matches where I started on the bench. I was good in the games against Monaco, Union Saint-Gilloise and Juventus. Still, that is not enough. I believe I can do better and I will try to improve."
Fenerbahçe Derby and Goal
Emphasizing that the goal he scored in his first Fenerbahçe derby was very important to him, Sara said, "Scoring a goal in the derby against our biggest rival was very special. Remembering it is something else. I want to score in the next match. I need to focus ahead. I am focusing on my next match."
Club Comparison
Comparing Galatasaray with São Paulo and Norwich City, the clubs he played for in his career, Sara said, "Norwich City and Galatasaray are very different. Norwich City has fewer fans. They don't have as many fans as Galatasaray and São Paulo. When I played for Norwich City, I was living in a small city. São Paulo and Galatasaray are very similar to each other. Culturally, Turkey and Brazil have similar perspectives on football. In both countries, football is like an addiction. When you go to away games, the fans are very passionate and constantly support you. For Norwich City, we can say it's more about the brain and less about emotion."
Competition for a Place and the Championship
Responding to a question about the competition for places in midfield, Sara said, "This situation won't affect me. Our coach will choose the best performer. If I'm not the best performer, I'll be on the bench. If I am the best performer, I'll be on the pitch. I think it's that simple." The Brazilian player also admitted that a fifth consecutive championship this season would be tough, "Frankly, this will be the most challenging season in recent years. The reason is not our rivals, but our own mentality. When you look at it, it's a matter of mentality. We were talking about this during the championship celebrations last season. We were discussing that we needed to win a fifth consecutive title. I'm not making any promises for this season, but I'm very excited. We want to win the league this season."
Brazil National Team Goal
Stating that he very much wants to be recalled to the Brazil national team, Sara said, "I am more motivated. I was expecting a call-up, but it's normal that they didn't call me because of my injury. Most people don't know, but I wasn't called up for the World Cup squad due to injury. This season, I want to put in a good performance and be called up again. Being called up to the Brazil national team is one of my main goals." He added that as a child, he was impressed by Zinedine Zidane in the 2006 World Cup match between Brazil and France, and that it was an interesting coincidence that he earned his first national team cap also in a match against France.
Friendship with Osimhen
Describing his relationship with teammate Victor Osimhen in a humorous way, Sara said, "(Laughing) My biggest enemy. Actually, when you look at it, Osimhen is a good friend. We joke around. The level of competition and friendship between us is very high. He gets on my nerves, but I can say he's a good friend too."
Praise for Turkish Cuisine
Expressing that he loves eating and is fascinated by Turkish cuisine, Sara said, "I love eating. Eating is one of the most beautiful things in life. I like Brazilian cuisine more than Turkish cuisine. I also like Turkish cuisine a lot. I love baklava. I don't know how you make chicken but you make it very delicious. Mantı is also my favourite dish."
