The Gaza Health Ministry has released its mortality report for 2025. According to the report, described as the first annual official mortality report published since 2022, 24,650 people died in the Gaza Strip in 2025.

Direct Israeli attacks topped the causes of death at 70.1%, corresponding to about 17,280 people. Heart disease ranked second at 7.7%, while other causes accounted for the remaining 22.2%. Men made up 73.4% of the dead and women 26.6%.

By governorate, Gaza recorded the highest share at 37.3%, followed by North Gaza at 20.2%, Khan Younis at 19.5%, the Middle Area at 12.3% and Rafah at 10.7%. The report said the under-five mortality rate rose markedly to 33.4 per 1,000 live births.

Why the report matters: It is the first comprehensive official statistic recording deaths in Gaza from all causes, not only those killed in attacks. The data reveal both the direct toll of the war and the deaths occurring under a largely collapsed health system, as well as the heavy toll on children. Showing that death registration continued while health infrastructure was severely damaged, the report is also a key source for potential legal processes and humanitarian planning.

Israeli attacks continued in 2025 despite a ceasefire declared in October. According to ministry figures, at least 72,063 people had been killed in Gaza since October 2023 as of February 16, 2026.
