German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said they were considering restricting access to the secret Germany Operations Plan if the AfD formed a government in the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
Speaking to lawmakers during a session in parliament, Pistorius said options were being considered to prevent the plan from falling into the hands of the AfD.
Plan covers military and civilian measures
The Germany Operations Plan contains the military and civilian measures the country would implement in the event of a possible crisis or war. The document includes Germany's responsibilities under NATO and national defense, as well as arrangements for the deployment of troops from allied countries through Germany to NATO's eastern flank.
The full text of the plan is held by state chanceries and the relevant government authorities. Municipalities receive only an abridged version of the document.
State government's access to information under debate
Spokespeople for the Defense Ministry did not directly answer questions about whether security and defense information provided to the Saxony-Anhalt government would be restricted if an AfD-led state government were formed. The spokespeople limited their response to saying that the plan was classified.
Rainer Robra, state secretary at the Saxony-Anhalt State Chancellery, opposed excluding the state government from security and defense information if the AfD came to power.
Robra, a member of the CDU, said he could not imagine how constitutionally required cooperation between the states could function if the state were deprived of information on domestic or defense policy. He also warned that further exclusion of the AfD at the federal level after its result in democratic elections could prove counterproductive.
AfD wins 39 seats in the state parliament
The AfD won the state parliament election held in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, September 6, with 43.8 percent of the vote and will be represented by 39 lawmakers in the 83-seat legislature.
The CDU won 15 seats, while the SPD, the Greens and the Left each secured 8 seats, and the BSW will have 5 lawmakers in the parliament.
