The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) awarded the 2026 World Cup best player prize to Argentina's Lionel Messi. In a statement on its website, the IFFHS said the award was determined based on a comprehensive efficiency index reflecting the player's performance throughout the tournament.
In a tournament where Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the final, Messi, who turned 39, scored 8 goals and provided 4 assists in eight matches. He was the second top scorer, behind France's Kylian Mbappé (10 goals).
The IFFHS evaluation criteria included weighted match points, goals, assists, and especially the level of impact in the knockout stages.

According to media reports after the tournament, Messi told his teammates that the final was his last match for the national team. Messi, who played 207 matches and scored 125 goals for Argentina, won the Copa America in 2021 and 2024, the World Cup in 2022, and was a runner-up in 2014 and 2026, as well as winning the Finalissima in 2022.
