The Iranian Football Federation announced that the US has canceled the ticket allocation reserved for them for the 2026 World Cup group matches. The federation argues that this decision prevents Iranian fans from attending the tournament matches.
According to the federation's statement, FIFA rules allocate 8% of tickets for each match to participating federations, which are then distributed to fans through official channels. Iran stated that it had started the sales process according to the quota granted for the group stage matches and that some fans had made preparations accordingly.
What is Iran's objection based on?
The Iranian Football Federation claimed that the US had previously imposed some bureaucratic obstacles. The statement also mentioned that some support staff were denied visas. The federation said this contradicts the spirit of the tournament and the principle of equality among participating countries.
The federation called on FIFA and the tournament organizers to ensure impartiality, fairness, and the enforcement of established rules. Iran demanded that the necessary conditions be provided for its fans to attend the matches.
Visa crisis and change of preparations
This dispute is not the only issue Iran has faced during the World Cup process. Tehran also announced problems with the entry of about 15 administrative and management personnel in its delegation into the US.
Amid rising tensions, Iran announced that it moved its World Cup training base initially planned in Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana near the Mexican border.
Match schedule announced
Iran will play its first match in the tournament on June 15 in Los Angeles against New Zealand. Iran will face Belgium again in Los Angeles on June 21 and Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
FIFA and the US organizers have not made a public statement regarding Iran's accusations.
