Extraordinary measures have been implemented in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, ahead of the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A one-day World Cup holiday was declared for students, and classes were canceled in all educational institutions, including universities.
The decision was made to reduce the expected congestion in the city before tomorrow's Mexico-South Africa match. The opening game will start at 22:00 TRT and will officially kick off the tournament.
Remote Work Directive for Public Employees
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that public employees, except those involved in essential public services and World Cup organization staff, will work from home. Sheinbaum said this step aims to improve transportation, road safety, and accessibility conditions in Mexico City.
Sheinbaum also called on the private sector to adopt remote work models where possible. This is intended to ease the pressure on the city center on the opening day.
Shakira to Perform at the Opening Ceremony
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being jointly hosted by Mexico, the USA, and Canada. The opening ceremony is expected to last about an hour.
Shakira will perform at the ceremony and will debut her song "Dai Dai," prepared specifically for the World Cup, live for the first time. While millions of football fans are expected to follow the event, security and transportation measures have also been increased in Mexico City.
Officials warned of possible congestion in the city center and urged citizens to prefer public transportation.
