Oscar Piastri secured an important haul of points for McLaren by finishing fourth at the challenging Monaco Grand Prix weekend. The Australian driver started the race from seventh on the grid and moved up to fourth following penalty decisions and developments in the final stages.
Piastri said gaining three positions in Monaco is always a good result. Although he did not make a direct overtake himself, he emphasized that they read the race well and executed their strategy correctly.
This result meant valuable 12 points for McLaren. However, Piastri openly admitted that their race pace was not enough to compete with the front runners.
McLaren’s Speed Issues Under Scrutiny
Piastri said the team needs to understand why they struggled so much throughout the weekend. Reminding that Barcelona and the rest of the season lie ahead, he stressed the need to work harder to close the gap to the leading teams.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella also praised Piastri’s race. Stella said his driver delivered an extremely precise and controlled performance, executing the plan almost flawlessly.
However, Stella did not hide concerns about the car’s fundamental speed. He noted that Ferrari and Mercedes appeared on a very different level in Monaco and emphasized that the factory must work intensively to improve the car’s speed and reliability.
Early Race End for Norris
The situation was tougher on the other side of the McLaren garage. Reigning world champion Lando Norris retired on lap 45 due to a power unit issue.
This marked Norris’s first consecutive retirements in his Formula 1 career. Additionally, the gap to championship leader Antonelli widened to 98 points.
Norris said the weekend was disappointing for the team and that they faced another retirement. For McLaren, Monaco was both a recovery that brought points and a serious warning about the car’s performance.
