Real Madrid has announced a €150 million bid for Atlético Madrid’s Argentine forward Julián Álvarez. This transfer move, amid fierce competition between the clubs, fulfilled the Madrid side’s major transfer promise made during the election period.
Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez had stated during his re-election campaign that he would make a €150 million offer. The club confirmed on Tuesday evening that this offer was made for Álvarez.
The statement noted that Atlético Madrid thanked them for the proposal but rejected it on the grounds that it was below the player’s release clause. Real Madrid claimed that the negotiations were conducted in a friendly atmosphere.
Atlético Madrid soon responded with a counter statement, saying they did not thank Real Madrid and raised allegations that their rival edited a video related to Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the Bernabéu.
It is reported that Madrid will not increase the offer following this bid. Therefore, Álvarez’s chances of moving to the Bernabéu this summer appear slim.
These events have brought renewed visibility to the tension between the two major clubs in Spain’s capital. It is noted that the clubs often compete fiercely for youth academy players, with the rivalry sometimes intensifying.
Barcelona had also previously considered a plan worth around €100 million for Álvarez. However, due to the Catalan club’s financial limits and the new transfer registration process, progress on this front has been difficult.
Álvarez’s name is linked not only with Madrid and Barcelona but also with other European clubs. While uncertainty continues over the Argentine forward’s future, he is under contract with his club until 2030.
Earlier this week, Álvarez was left out of Argentina’s squad in a friendly against Sweden, keeping him at the center of transfer discussions. Following all these developments, the likelihood of the player staying at Atlético Madrid seems to have increased.
