Real Madrid has gone to the polls for the first time in twenty years to elect a new president. The election, held in the club's home city of Madrid, features the current president Florentino Perez competing against businessman Enrique Riquelme.
About 70,000 voters are eligible to cast their ballots in this election, with Perez seeking an eighth term. The 79-year-old Perez has served as president from 2000 to 2006 and again since 2009.
The decision to hold the election was made on May 12, reportedly because Perez believed his rival would not meet the necessary financial requirements. However, with Riquelme fulfilling the conditions, the race officially began.
Campaign Promises Take Center Stage
During the two-week campaign period, both candidates stood out with notable transfer promises. On Perez's side, potential moves for players like Jose Mourinho, Ibrahima Konate, and Denzel Dumfries were discussed.
Perez also stated that if re-elected, he would present a €150 million offer, the highest in Real Madrid's history. He indicated this offer would be for a player of Cristiano Ronaldo's caliber but did not name anyone specifically.
Riquelme positioned himself alongside club legends such as Del Bosque, Casillas, Hierro, and Raul. He also made ambitious promises to bring Erling Haaland and Rodri into the squad.
Familiar Names and Sharp Responses
It was reported that Riquelme said he would send sporting director Raul to meet with Jurgen Klopp if elected. However, Klopp's side reportedly did not welcome this contact.
Statements from Erling Haaland's circle also indicated that the player would not be leaving the team. These developments have turned the election into a contest defined by transfer promises and mutual messaging.
Voting began at 9:00 AM and the polls are scheduled to close at 8:00 PM. Results are expected shortly thereafter, revealing the club's new president for the upcoming term.
The winner of the election will not only lead the club's administration but also shape Real Madrid's transfer and management strategy in the years ahead.
