The Monaco Grand Prix was stopped with a red flag 10 laps before the finish after two separate crashes at the final corner. The final part of the race was suspended due to consecutive contacts occurring at the same point on the track.
First, Lance Stroll, running in 16th place, sent his Aston Martin into the barriers at the final corner, prompting the safety car to come out. When the race restarted, Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc crashed into the wall at the same spot.
Following this second crash, the safety car was deployed again. Shortly after, the FIA announced the race was suspended and began inspecting the track surface in the area where the two crashes occurred.
Suspicious Track Surface Issue at the Same Corner
After the incidents, the FIA stated it would investigate the possibility that the track surface at the location might have deteriorated. The race suspension coincided with this inspection process.
Stroll and Leclerc did not blame the track surface for their crashes. Stroll attributed the issue to engine braking, while Leclerc mentioned problems with his car's brakes.
Antonelli Leading, Restart Time Announced
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli showed a strong performance throughout the race with Mercedes. Max Verstappen's Red Bull, however, failed to make the expected start.
After temporary repairs, the race is planned to restart at 17:12 local time. Antonelli is expected to lead the top three, followed by Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari and Isack Hadjar's Red Bull.
George Russell was in fourth place with Mercedes' other car. Russell received only a pass-through penalty for multiple violations during the race.
Hamilton and Hadjar are also under investigation for breaches related to safety car procedures.
