Serena Williams made a successful return to the court after nearly four years by winning her first match alongside Victoria Mboko, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Queen's women's doubles tournament. In the West London match, Williams and her 19-year-old Canadian partner defeated the third seeds Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez 7-6(2), 6-2.
At the start of the match, Williams appeared cautious with some shots and occasionally searched for her rhythm. However, she was effective on her serves, becoming one of the key players providing an advantage in the first service games, and increased her tempo as the match progressed.
Mboko was one of the players who carried the game during critical moments. After the match, Williams praised her partner, noting that the young player kept the team strong. Their quick chemistry despite playing together for the first time was notable.
Although Williams made some errors in the first set, her powerful serve and aggressive play on important points balanced the score. The opposing pair made double faults under the pressure of the high-profile match, missed easy opportunities, and lost the tie-break at the end of the set to Williams and Mboko.
In the second set, Williams opened up even more. The duo capitalized on an early break opportunity and maintained control of the game. Williams’ consecutive strong serves and cross-court shots were among the moments that widened the gap in the final stages of the match.
Williams also spoke about her emotional moments during the match. She said she felt tense shortly before the match but then let go of it and focused on the game. Giving herself a C- grade for her performance, Williams said she still enjoyed playing alongside her partner.
Mboko expressed that sharing the court with Williams was an honor and a privilege. The young player said they found room for improvement during the match but stood strong together in the big moments.
The match reignited questions about whether Williams will return to singles play. However, this result does not mean she is immediately ready for singles level; some rallies showed areas in timing and movement that still need improvement.
Nevertheless, Williams’ performance was a strong sign that she can return to top-level competition. Mboko’s post-match words, "we’re going for more," indicated that the pair does not want to limit this start to just one round.
