Spain defeated Portugal 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. The only goal of the match, played at Dallas Stadium, came from substitute Mikel Moreno in stoppage time.
Moreno sent Ferran Torres's through ball into the net in the 90+1st minute to send Spain through. With this result, Spain will face the winner of the USA-Belgium match in the quarterfinal on Friday, July 10.
Spain also set a record by keeping a clean sheet for the fifth consecutive match in the tournament. Portugal, meanwhile, bid farewell to the tournament as captain Cristiano Ronaldo's dream of winning the title in what he had previously called 'my last World Cup' came to an end.
Both teams started the match quickly and found goal opportunities early on. In the 5th minute, Joao Cancelo's powerful shot went just wide of the post, and in the 6th minute, Mikel Oyarzabal failed to convert when one-on-one with goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
In the 12th minute, goalkeeper Unai Simon saved Ronaldo's powerful strike. In the 16th minute, Costa denied consecutive shots from Lamine Yamal and Alex Pina. Towards the end of the first half, in the 37th minute, Joao Felix's header was saved by the goalkeeper, and Ronaldo tried to follow up but Simon again prevented a goal. Nuno Mendes's fierce shot in the 45th minute deflected off Pedro Porro and hit the crossbar.
The second half saw a more controlled game, with defenses and goalkeepers coming to the fore. However, Spain snatched victory with Moreno's goal in stoppage time. This marked the second time Spain beat Portugal 1-0 in a World Cup round of 16; they had previously won by the same score in 2010 in South Africa and went on to reach the final.
The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, continues with 48 teams from June 11 to July 19.
