Ukrainian businessman Vadim Yermolayev (58) was severely injured on the evening of June 29 when a homemade bomb placed at the entrance of his Monaco residence exploded. Yermolayev's wife and their 13-year-old son were also injured in the blast.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Nice, France, for treatment. Yermolayev's wife suffered the most severe injuries, undergoing amputation of both legs, and was reported to be in critical condition. Yermolayev sustained burns and shrapnel wounds, while their son suffered minor injuries.
The Monaco prosecutor's office ruled out the initial possibility of terrorism and launched an investigation into attempted murder. According to authorities, the explosive, filled with bolts and pellets, was left in a bag at the entrance of the building in the city center.
Security cameras recorded a person dressed in dark clothing leaving the bag and fleeing. The suspect was reported to have escaped toward Beausoleil near the French border, with police losing track of him in a dead-end street, and the search continuing with helicopter support.
Yermolayev is the founder of the Alef group of companies based in Dnipro, Ukraine. In December 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky placed the businessman on a sanctions list, citing his continued operation of associated liquor businesses in occupied Crimea.
The person or group behind the attack has not yet been identified. It was reported that the investigation is being conducted in coordination between Monaco and French authorities, with official statements regarding the perpetrator's motive and identity pending.
