US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham died at 71 due to a sudden health issue. Graham's office announced his death in a statement on social media Saturday evening but did not provide details.
Reactions divided
Graham's death drew mixed reactions in the US and internationally due to his controversial political legacy. Some commentators and activists criticized Graham for his pro-war policies and unconditional support for Israel.
Political commentator Joey Mannarino said that despite hating Graham, his death saddened him. Mannarino noted that Graham mostly voted in favor of Trump at critical moments and did not block his policies.
Commentator Jackson Hinkle called Graham a 'devil' and reshared an old video in which he claimed Graham celebrated the killing of Iranian schoolgirls. Journalist Wajahat Ali wrote that Graham betrayed all his values to maintain his political position and please Trump.
Activist Shaun King noted that Israel was deeply saddened by Graham's death, saying, 'Graham loved Israel far more than the US and even his own state of South Carolina.' Comedian Freddy Goldstein said Graham's political legacy 'caused great harm and faced no consequences.'
Praise from Republicans
On the other hand, Republican colleagues defended Graham. Senator Roger Wicker said words were insufficient for Graham, his friend of over 30 years, and praised his service in the Air Force and work in Congress. Wicker described Graham as an 'irreplaceable' figure.
South Carolina Senator Tim Scott said the state lost a statesman and he lost a dear friend. Scott emphasized that Graham prioritized faith, family, and South Carolina's interests throughout his journey from humble beginnings to the Senate, and that he radiated joy even in the toughest moments.
Political career
Lindsey Graham served in the US Air Force for three decades. He was elected Senator from South Carolina in 2002 and entered the presidential race in 2015 but withdrew in December of that year.
Graham was known as one of the US's foremost supporters of Israel. During the Gaza war, he advocated providing Israel with all necessary aid and even suggested giving Israel nuclear weapons to end the war. He also harshly criticized former President Joe Biden's decision to halt some arms shipments to Israel.
