Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that Vladimir Putin is not willing to end Russia's war in Ukraine. In an evening address following Putin's refusal to return to direct peace talks, Zelenskiy claimed that Moscow has once again chosen war.
Referring to Putin's response, Zelenskiy stated that the Russian side has once again opted for the path of war. The Ukrainian leader expressed that Putin does not want to end the war and that many people around the world are disappointed by this answer.
Putin Closes the Door on the Open Letter
Putin previously showed disregard for Zelenskiy's open letter calling for direct talks. The Russian leader said that meeting with Zelenskiy would be meaningless and argued that it is not appropriate to make progress on this matter publicly.
Putin also claimed that the letter contained rude elements. This stance reinforced the outlook that the contacts desired to be restarted between Kyiv and Moscow will not easily progress in the near future.
Hopes for Peace Talks Weaken
The recent statements by Zelenskiy and Putin have dampened expectations for reopening peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. It was noted that the US-mediated contacts have been stalled for months, with Washington's focus shifting to the war in Iran during this period.
In previous months, Moscow repeatedly rejected ceasefire proposals, viewing them as a pretext for moving to the final stage. This attitude has led to a deadlock in the diplomatic process while the war continues on the ground.
Zelenskiy’s Direct Call Was a First Step
In the open letter published on June 4, Zelenskiy proposed a face-to-face meeting with Putin to end the war. This call stood out as Zelenskiy’s first direct public outreach to Putin since 2022.
US President Donald Trump also expressed support for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine on June 5. Trump suggested that a resolution to the war might be near and said the parties should address the issue among themselves.
For now, the situation highlights the sharp contrast between Kyiv’s call for direct contact and Moscow’s unequivocal rejection. The recent statements from both sides indicate that the possibility of returning to the peace table will not become clear anytime soon.
