The Zero Waste Foundation and the London Climate Action Week (LCAW) ecosystem have signed a cooperation protocol. Samed Ağırbaş, President of the Zero Waste Foundation and COP31 High-Level Climate Champion, and Nick Henry, Founder and CEO of Climate Action, signed the protocol at the ceremony.
The cooperation aims to increase the visibility of the zero-waste and circular-economy approach on the global climate action agenda. Strengthening the sharing of knowledge and experience between the parties and developing joint initiatives are also among the protocol's objectives.
Joint events to be considered
Under the protocol, the Foundation and the LCAW ecosystem are expected to expand the mutual exchange of knowledge and experience. Plans include considering joint events and programs, carrying out initiatives that bring together stakeholders from different sectors, and increasing international awareness of zero waste and the circular economy.
The cooperation aims to establish a complementary structure linking LCAW's broad climate action network with the Zero Waste Foundation's international work on zero waste. The parties' initiatives are expected to contribute to the consideration of the zero-waste and circular-economy approach in wider international circles as one of the fundamental components of climate action.
Zero-waste approach on the COP31 agenda
The zero-waste approach, which has grown under the leadership of Emine Erdoğan, Founder of the Zero Waste Movement, Chair of the United Nations High-Level Advisory Board of Eminent Persons on Zero Waste and Honorary President of the Zero Waste Foundation, is emerging as one of the key topics on the climate action agenda during Türkiye's COP31 Presidency.
Under the process led by COP31 President and Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum, the priority areas include not only combating climate change but also using resources efficiently, reducing waste and strengthening the circular economy.
London Climate Action Week
Established in 2019, London Climate Action Week is among the city-scale climate platforms that bring together actors from different sectors in London. The platform provides a basis for developing cooperation on climate action among governments, cities, the business community, financial institutions, academia, civil society and local communities.
Energy transition, climate finance, resilience, innovation, cities, the circular economy and sustainable production and consumption models were addressed during LCAW 2026, held from June 20 to 28.
Through its participation in LCAW 2026, the Zero Waste Foundation brought the zero-waste approach together with the global climate action agenda. The Foundation's work was shared with international participants at a stand set up during the event, while Ağırbaş also took part as a speaker in various programs.
Parties highlight cooperation
Following the signing of the protocol, Ağırbaş said he hoped to carry out strong joint work and organize joint events at COP31 and London Climate Action Week. Ağırbaş also said they looked forward to welcoming participants at Istanbul Zero Waste Week next year.
Henry expressed his excitement about the partnership and said the protocol would be a good starting point.
