Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu reported that 145 flights took place at the capital's airports during NATO's 36th Summit held in Ankara.
The summit was held in Ankara on Tuesday and Wednesday. Turkey hosted NATO leaders for the second time, 22 years after the 2004 Istanbul summit.
In a statement to Anadolu Agency, Minister Uraloğlu said that air traffic was successfully managed. There were 82 flights to Ankara Airport and 63 to Esenboğa Airport.
Uraloğlu emphasized that operations were completed in an uninterrupted and safe manner, in line with international standards.
The minister said that Ankara Airport, inaugurated last month by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has been transformed into an international aviation hub capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft after eight months of renovation work.
As part of the renovation, the runway length was increased from 2,450 meters to 3,000 meters, and its width from 42 meters to 60 meters. Additionally, a new 160,000-square-meter aircraft parking area was built, capable of serving 44 aircraft simultaneously. An official guesthouse and a parking lot for 310 vehicles were also added to the airport.
