As the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, kicks off tomorrow, ticket prices for the tournament have sparked significant debate. The prices set from the opening match to the final have made this the most expensive World Cup in history.
Tickets for the opening match start at $560, with the highest price reaching up to $2,735. This represents a substantial increase compared to the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where opening match tickets ranged from $55 to $618.
Sharp Increase in Group Stage Ticket Prices
Tickets for the tournament are sold in four different categories. The average ticket price for group stage matches is around $400.
In the last World Cup, group stage ticket prices ranged from $11 to $220, with an average cost below $100. Thus, group stage tickets for 2026 are noticeably more expensive than those of the previous tournament.
Record-Breaking Final Ticket Prices
For the final match at the New York New Jersey Stadium, the lowest ticket price is set at $2,030, while the highest reaches $6,370. These figures indicate an even greater financial burden for fans aiming to attend the final.
At the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, the cheapest ticket was $206, and the most expensive was $1,607. Therefore, the lowest-priced ticket for the 2026 final is nearly ten times higher than that of the previous tournament.
Notable Difference Compared to EURO 2024
The ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup are also compared to those of the EURO 2024 final. The final of the tournament hosted by Germany had a lowest ticket price of about $100.
The European Football Supporters Association had filed a complaint with the European Commission against FIFA before the 2026 World Cup due to high ticket prices and sales practices. The association emphasized fans' demands for fairness and transparency in ticket access and accused FIFA of using its exclusive sales power to impose unacceptable conditions.
As the 2026 tournament approaches, the debate centers not only on the matches themselves but also on the cost for fans to attend them. Especially the announced prices for the opening and final matches have brought the economic aspect of the championship to the forefront alongside its sporting excitement.
