Twenty-six people drowned while swimming during the record heat that affected Germany over the weekend. The figures released on Monday by the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) also include people reported missing and not yet found between Friday and Sunday.
According to the German news agency DPA, the association had announced seven fatal accidents on Thursday as well. The DLRG stated that eight people were hospitalized in the weekend incidents.
A 15-year-old boy was seriously injured after jumping into a quarry lake. As temperature records were broken consecutively over the weekend, thermometers in the state of Brandenburg near the capital Berlin showed 41.7 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
DLRG President Ute Vogt had warned people not to underestimate the dangers of swimming ahead of the heatwave. Vogt said, "We repeatedly see that men overestimate their abilities and take risks that could be avoided."
According to the association's 2025 statistics, 82 percent of drowning victims are male. It was notable that all 26 people who died over the weekend were men and boys.
