The Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft in the Turkish Air Force's inventory will play a critical role in the security of the 36th NATO Heads of State and Government Summit held in Ankara.
The aircraft stationed at the 3rd Main Jet Base Command in Konya, with their multi-role electronically scanned air and sea radar, can scan 360 degrees and identify numerous targets up to 400 kilometers away. The identified targets are relayed in real time to ground operation centers, aircraft in the field, and ships.
The AEW&C aircraft, which will perform 60 hours of uninterrupted flight during the summit, will provide early warning and identification of unidentified aircraft approaching Turkish airspace.
Statement from the mission team
The AEW&C aircraft mission team commander Major Fatih Kulak stated that they are ready for the mission within the scope of the summit. Noting that the aircraft, also known as the E-7T, constitutes the early warning and control capability of the airspace, Kulak said, "Our mission will be to monitor our country's airspace within the scope of the NATO Summit. We will provide early warning and contribute to the identification of any unidentified aircraft approaching Turkish airspace."
Major Kulak added that they are always prepared for the possibility of the mission duration being extended.
