Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said a UAV exploded near the Romanian border, very close to the Trans-Balkan natural gas pipeline.
Radev said the type of UAV had not yet been determined. He said the explosion was powerful enough to be heard from a distance and produced dense black smoke, leading to an estimate that the aircraft was carrying a significant amount of explosives.
Security perimeter established
The area was secured after the explosion. No one was killed, and the infrastructure was not damaged.
Statement on Romanian airspace
Romania’s Defense Ministry said its surveillance systems had not detected any aircraft crossing Romanian airspace and traveling toward Bulgaria.
The ministry said it was monitoring developments related to the UAV that exploded in an area of Bulgaria near the Romanian border and that further details about the incident would be made public.
