Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva devoted extensive attention to developments in Gaza in a speech delivered during the General Debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Lula described the actions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in Gaza as “genocide” and also condemned Hamas’s attacks. The Brazilian leader drew attention to the war’s long-term effects, particularly on civilians.

Referring to the losses suffered by women and children in Gaza, Lula said Palestinians would continue to carry the pain and trauma left by the war for generations.
Lula also argued that the Palestinian people should have their own state, reiterating his support for a two-state solution. In his speech, he criticized the international community and the United Nations system for failing to prevent ongoing wars.
