Ayşe Begüm Onbaşı, 24, who won a gold medal at the 2021 Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships in Azerbaijan, returned to gymnastics with the support of her family and coaches after taking a break from the sport in 2023.
Onbaşı resumed training after an approximately one-year break and won the Aerobic Gymnastics Federation Cup held in Ankara last month. The result earned her a place on the national team, and the gymnast will represent Türkiye at the world championships in Spain.
Preparing for the world championships
Onbaşı continues training with her coach, Gürkan Er, at Muradiye Sports Hall ahead of the 19th Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships, which will be held in Spain from September 13 to 15.
The national gymnast trains six days a week and will compete in the individual category with a routine themed around “Mission: Impossible.” Onbaşı said the routine is connected to her story of returning to the sport after deciding to quit gymnastics in 2023.
Onbaşı said she also competed with this theme at last year’s European Championships, adding that continuing with the same idea after her return to the sport was meaningful for them. She said she hoped to achieve strong results at the world championships.
Her goal is to show her development
Ayşe Begüm Onbaşı said she would compete against two strong rivals from Russia and Ukraine at the championships. She noted that competing against these athletes was important for seeing her own limits.
Emphasizing that she wanted to reclaim the world title she won in 2021, Onbaşı said her main goal was not simply to win a gold medal. The gymnast said she wanted to show an Ayşe Begüm who had developed further than she was in 2021 and to experience again the joy of seeing the Turkish flag raised and hearing the national anthem played.
