One floor of the historic mansion in Sefa neighborhood of Mardin’s Savur district, where Nobel Prize-winning scientist Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar was born and raised, has been restored and converted into a museum. The opening of the Aziz Sancar Museum took place at a ceremony attended by Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, Mardin Governor Tuncay Akkoyun, Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar and Savur Mayor Engin Uğur Hamidi.
Converted into a museum as part of a project carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the building contains traces of Sancar’s childhood and youth, as well as the period when he practiced medicine. Ersoy said the mansion would pass on Sancar’s life, scientific work and achievements to future generations.
The historic mansion’s architectural features were preserved
A museum was established on one 395-square-meter floor of the four-story masonry building, whose history dates back to before 1938. The restoration included structural reinforcement, plastering, stone cleaning, repointing, reinforced-concrete flooring and insulation work.
Work was carried out on features including rainwater spouts, chimneys, stone moldings, motifs and inscriptions to preserve the building’s original architectural character. The mansion’s interior was also rearranged with consideration for its original layout and use during the period.
Materials related to Sancar’s life are on display
Three separate halls were prepared in the museum. They display photographs from Sancar’s life, medical instruments, diplomas, academic gowns, gifts and awards he received, as well as files related to his scientific work.
Ersoy said the museum was designed not only as a place recounting Sancar’s life but also as a space that would show children and young people the importance of science, hard work and determination. He said the mansion was a cultural asset reflecting Savur’s traditional residential architecture and the region’s historical memory.
Mardin Governor’s Office plans to use the building’s basement and other floors as a reading room and science center. The building will thus host educational and scientific activities for children and young people in addition to serving as a museum.
Sancar and local officials spoke at the opening
Mardin Governor Tuncay Akkoyun said the museum would provide an important opportunity for young people seeking to take Aziz Sancar’s determination and success as an example. Akkoyun said the historic mansion would be a living and inspiring cultural asset that connects the past with the future.
Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar thanked those who contributed to bringing the project to life. Sancar said he would continue working on new projects to introduce Türkiye and Savur to the world.
Savur Mayor Engin Uğur Hamidi said they aimed to turn the museum into a center of science for children in the district. During the ceremony, Minister Ersoy and Governor Akkoyun presented Sancar with a framed display containing photographs of him, his mother, his father and his friends, along with his birth certificate and diploma register.
