The BIST 100 index on Borsa Istanbul opened at 14,637.72 points, up 122.89 points, or 0.85%, from the previous close.
The index had finished Friday 0.82% higher at 14,514.82 points in a buying-led session. At the open, the banking index rose 3.77%, while the holding companies index gained 0.75%.
Sector index performance
The banking index posted the biggest gain among sector indices. The information technology index stood out as the biggest decliner, falling 4.08%.
Global markets began the week under selling pressure as investors turned their attention to U.S. growth data and inflation-related indicators due to be released. The Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium and Nvidia’s earnings are also among the main events being monitored by investors.
Domestic markets are showing a positive trend led by banking shares, while uncertainty over a ceasefire in the Middle East is complicating pricing. The lack of a concrete outcome in negotiations between the United States and Iran, along with the spillover of their reciprocal statements into the economic sphere, is increasing uncertainty in the markets.
Markets are also watching expectations that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will announce new economic sanctions against Iran today. Oil prices, which remain elevated amid geopolitical uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for energy supplies, are keeping concerns over global inflationary pressures alive.
Domestic data agenda
The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye announced that it had decided to resume one-week repo auctions. Domestic markets will monitor the financial services confidence index, sectoral inflation expectations, the household expectations survey, and the foreign-currency assets and liabilities of non-financial companies.
Technically, 14,700 and 14,800 points stand out as resistance levels for the BIST 100 index, while 14,500 and 14,400 points are seen as support levels.
