Bonnie Tyler, one of the most powerful voices in British pop rock music, has died at the age of 75 in Portugal. The artist's family and team announced that Tyler unexpectedly passed away due to the illness she was being treated for.
The family said in a written statement: "It is with great sadness that we announce Bonnie's unexpected passing in Portugal due to the illness she was being treated for."
She underwent emergency surgery in May
Bonnie Tyler's health problems began in May. Her family announced on Facebook that the artist had undergone emergency intestinal surgery and subsequently fell into a coma. As a result, Tyler's upcoming summer tour had to be postponed.
At the time, the family stated that her condition was serious but stable, and that doctors were optimistic about a full recovery. They also expressed their discomfort with rumors circulating about Tyler's condition and called on the media to stop speculating.
In mid-June, her manager announced that Tyler had come out of the coma but that her condition was still very poor and she was being treated in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Portugal. The family confirmed that the artist was no longer in a coma, expressed gratitude for the messages of support from around the world, and noted that Tyler was aware of these messages.
A career from Wales to the world stage
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Wales in 1951, Bonnie Tyler battled tuberculosis as a child and was quite shy during her teenage years. At 17, she came second in a talent competition organized by a club in Swansea, which gave her confidence and marked her first step into the music world.
Tyler first drew attention in the 1970s with her song "Lost in France", but her biggest breakthrough came in the early 1980s. The 1983 single "Total Eclipse of the Heart" sold millions of copies and topped the charts in the UK and the US. Tyler once said that when she first heard the song from Jim Steinman, she immediately felt it was something very special.
Another unforgettable hit was "Holding Out for a Hero", which appeared on the soundtrack of the 1984 film "Footloose". Around the same time, her song "Here She Comes" was used in the remake of the film "Metropolis".
Grammy nominations and Eurovision experience
Bonnie Tyler received three Grammy nominations during her career. She was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Total Eclipse of the Heart", and received two more nominations in the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance category for the album "Faster Than the Speed of Night" and the song "Here She Comes".
In 2013, Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Believe in Me". In 2021, she released her eighteenth and final studio album, "The Best Is Yet to Come". In 2023, she published her autobiography "Straight From the Heart", recounting her decades-long career, and was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to music.
In March, the artist performed her new song "Only Love" for the first time at a concert in London.
Personal life
Bonnie Tyler lived a childless life with her husband Robert Sullivan, whom she married in the 1970s. In a previous interview, the artist revealed that she had a miscarriage in her forties, and explained that she kept postponing motherhood due to her busy career, only to realize at 39 that it was too late. The couple tried to have a child for two more years before accepting the situation and continuing their life together.
