Bus traffic at the Shehyni-Medyka border crossing between Ukraine and Poland will be halted from June 15, 2026, until November 2027 due to repair works. The Ukrainian State Customs Service announced that only buses traveling from Ukraine to Poland will be unable to cross during this period.
The decision does not cover all vehicle traffic at the border. Buses and other crossings from Poland to Ukraine will not be affected.
Travel schedules to be reorganized
Authorities have urged bus companies to consider this information in their route planning. The prolonged closure will necessitate redirecting passenger transport to alternative border crossings.
The Shehyni-Medyka crossing is located about 80 kilometers west of Lviv and is one of nine land border crossings between the two countries. Therefore, this decision concerns a key crossing point that will directly impact passenger flow in the region.
Background of border congestion
Ukraine’s airspace has been closed since the full-scale war began in 2022, increasing demand for road and rail transport. The congestion at border crossings has highlighted the importance of alternative routes, especially for passenger and freight transport.
Meanwhile, border controls for Ukrainians entering the European Union are expected to become fully digital. Biometric scans and new travel authorization systems are anticipated to speed up crossings over time.
Until the maintenance work on the Shehyni-Medyka line is completed, bus operators will have to plan passenger movements according to new dates and alternative routes.
