Russia has announced that the possible restructuring of the operation of its military facilities in Syria has been discussed in ongoing contacts with Damascus.
Speaking to journalists in Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mariya Zakharova said that Russia's military presence in Syria is on the agenda of talks between the two countries. Zakharova noted that this issue is being considered in the context of a "possible restructuring of the functionality of military facilities."
Zakharova stated that this matter primarily falls under the jurisdiction of security agencies and that the process is being evaluated by the Ministry of Defense.
The spokeswoman also noted that bilateral cooperation between Russia and Syria is developing "very actively." According to Zakharova, state institutions and business circles of both countries are involved in efforts to expand relations.
Russia has two main military facilities in Syria: the naval logistics base in Tartus and the Hmeymim airbase located in the northwestern Latakia province.
These bases are considered key elements of Moscow's military presence in Syria. The statement revealed that potential changes to Russia's military arrangements in the region are being discussed as part of ongoing contacts with Damascus.
