Canada announced new sanctions against Russia following a meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the G7 Summit. The package announced by Ottawa targets 162 individuals, entities, and vessels connected to Russia’s shadow fleet, energy revenues, and the defense, industrial, and disinformation sectors.
Support for Ukraine emphasized in the meeting
Prime Minister Carney stated during the meeting that Canada supports the reconstruction of Ukraine. He noted that Canada’s expertise in energy, infrastructure, and clean technology could be leveraged in this process and emphasized the importance of continuing reforms to strengthen Ukraine’s resilience.
The two leaders also discussed strengthening the defense-industrial partnership. The meeting highlighted the goal of deepening cooperation through advanced technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicle production and closer integration of the two countries’ defense industries.
Canada’s sanctions list continues to grow
According to Canada’s announcement, the country has already imposed sanctions on more than 3,400 individuals and entities linked to Russia and over 600 vessels as of 2026. The new package aims to continue this approach by increasing pressure on Russia’s revenue sources and networks connected to the war.
Carney also condemned Russia’s attack on June 15 during the meeting. The attack targeted the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, one of the most sacred and culturally significant sites of Eastern Orthodoxy with a history of nearly a thousand years.
Diplomatic activity on the sidelines of the G7
During the summit, Zelenskyy met not only with Carney but also with U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. It was noted that the meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy was their first face-to-face contact in over four months.
These interactions took place at a time when Ukraine was trying to increase pressure for a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Canada’s new sanctions stood out as one of the concrete steps of support for Kyiv within the G7 framework.
