Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced that NATO's summit in Ankara will be a scene of great expectations. Speaking at a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ottawa, Anand said the summit, to be held in Ankara on July 7-8, will focus on defense industry, supply chains, and interoperability.
She added that the summit is expected to produce concrete economic benefits for allies. The Canadian minister noted the 83rd anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Canada, stating that bilateral trade volume reached $4.3 billion in 2025.
Anand recalled that free trade agreement negotiations between the two countries are ongoing, and emphasized that there are cooperation opportunities in many areas, especially energy, nuclear, defense, and critical minerals. Stressing that Canada is a major power in the energy sector, Anand praised Turkey's role in prisoner exchange negotiations conducted in the context of the Russia-Ukraine war.
The minister stated that they see Turkey as an important ally within NATO. It was learned that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Defense Minister David McGuinty will also attend the summit in Ankara.
