The second round of Colombia's presidential election is being held today. A tight race is underway between far-right lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella, who came first in the initial round with 43.7% of the vote, and leftist senator and current government coalition candidate Ivan Cepeda, who received 40.9%.
Contrasting Political Visions
The two candidates offer diametrically opposed promises for the country's future. De la Espriella pledges to end the negotiation process with armed groups and return to a tougher security and military approach to combat crime and violence. Ivan Cepeda promises to continue the policies of current President Gustavo Petro in fighting poverty and engaging in dialogue with armed groups.
Peace Process and US Influence
Despite the 2016 peace agreement signed between the FARC and the government, which ended Latin America's longest civil war, activities by dissident groups that reject the accord continue. During the election campaign, former US President Donald Trump's declaration of support for De la Espriella and President Petro's criticism of Trump added an international dimension to the elections.
Latest Polls and Uncertainty
The latest polls before the runoff show De la Espriella with a small lead over Cepeda. According to a poll by Atlas Intel, De la Espriella tends to receive 50.9% of the vote, while Cepeda stands at 43.1%. However, approximately 5.9% of voters remain undecided or plan to cast a blank vote, forming a critical bloc that could determine the outcome.
Observers caution against viewing the poll results as a definitive prediction. In the first round, pre-election polls showed Cepeda ahead, but the final result saw De la Espriella come in first.
Election Process
A runoff was required because none of the 14 candidates in the first round surpassed the 50% threshold. Approximately 41 million voters will choose the successor to leftist President Gustavo Petro, who is constitutionally barred from running for a second term. The winning candidate will officially take office on August 7.
