Tourism activity in Cappadocia increased during the autumn season, driven by interest from visitors arriving from East Asian countries, particularly China. Tourists visiting the region are exploring Cappadocia's natural and cultural riches through its fairy chimneys, historic sites and hot-air balloon tours.
The Golden Week holiday celebrated in China from Oct. 1 to 7 contributed to the rise in demand for the region. Alongside Chinese tourists, visitors from other Asian countries also showed interest in Cappadocia during the autumn season.
Balloon tours become the first activity of the day
Tourism activity in Cappadocia begins before sunrise. As visitors head to balloon launch sites and viewing areas, crowds continue throughout the day at hotels, tourist centers and archaeological sites.
Hot-air balloon tours are among the region's most popular activities. Tourists taking part in the tours view Cappadocia's rock formations and historic and cultural heritage from the sky, while some visitors photograph the balloons at sunrise from valleys and viewing points.
In addition to balloon tours, ATV rides, horseback tours, museum visits and excursions to underground cities are also among tourists' preferred activities in the region. Cappadocia's fairy chimneys and sites included on the UNESCO World Heritage List are important stops on visitors' itineraries.
Asian tourists praise Cappadocia
Indonesian tourist Ida Dewi said she was visiting Cappadocia for the first time and was highly impressed by the region. Dewi said the scenery created by the balloons further enhanced the area's beauty.
Singaporean tourist Chloe Lim said she had shared special moments with her friends in Cappadocia and was excited about the balloon experience. Chinese tourist Fang Mei Sun said Cappadocia had attracted her interest for a long time and that she had great affection for Türkiye.
Balloon pilot Tolga Eke said tourists from East Asian countries had increased activity in the region in recent weeks. Eke said these visitors were particularly interested in balloon tours that allow them to see the fairy chimneys from the sky.
High occupancy for hotel and balloon reservations
Muhammed Dinler, the owner of a group of companies providing accommodation and balloon tour services in Cappadocia, announced that hotel occupancy and balloon tour reservations had recently approached 100%.
Dinler said balloon tours had become one of Türkiye's leading tourism products and that Cappadocia could host visitors throughout the year. Saying October was one of the region's busiest and most productive periods, Dinler noted that demand from China had risen above normal levels because of the Golden Week holiday there.
Dinler said occupancy rates at the hotels affiliated with his group approached 100% in the first week of October, which also increased demand for balloon tours. He said the balloon experience encouraged visitors to return to viewing points the following morning and take in the scenery from the ground.
Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong are prominent markets in Cappadocia's tourism activity. Dinler said they expected demand from these countries to continue during the winter months and that increased reciprocal flights with China could support interest in the Chinese market.
Dinler also said promotional activities conducted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in different parts of the world increased the appeal of Türkiye's tourism centers for foreign visitors.
