Turkey witnessed a failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016, carried out by a limited number of soldiers affiliated with the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETÖ). The coup plotters attempted to seize critical state institutions, security bodies, and media outlets. The Turkish government declared July 15 as 'Democracy and National Unity Day' in memory of the 253 people who were martyred while resisting the coup attempt.
