The Portuguese Football Federation launched a disciplinary investigation into 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo after he left the national team camp. The federation announced that Ronaldo had been temporarily suspended until the investigation is completed.
The federation’s Non-Professional Affairs Department decided on October 9 to initiate disciplinary proceedings to examine the circumstances of the incident. The case was given priority status.
The federation said that, following the automatic measure to which Ronaldo was subject until the investigation was opened, a new, non-automatic suspension measure had been imposed. Details of the proceedings will remain confidential until the investigation is completed.
He left the camp after a dispute over playing time
Ronaldo left Portugal’s national team camp in Copenhagen before the Nations League match against Denmark. The departure came after a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus over playing time.

According to Ronaldo’s account, Jesus had agreed that the player would not feature in the matches against Norway and Denmark in order to manage his physical condition. Ronaldo said, however, that the coach later told him he would play for 30 minutes against Norway.
Ronaldo said he had been warming up since halftime and watched the minutes pass without being brought on, adding that Jesus had failed to keep his promise.

Ronaldo apologized to his teammates
Portugal won all three matches during the international break. Gonçalo Ramos, who replaced Ronaldo, scored three goals in those games.
Ronaldo later apologized to his teammates and supporters for leaving the camp. Acknowledging that he should not have left the national team camp, Ronaldo said he was ready to accept any punishment imposed by the federation, while also criticizing Jesus over the events that led to his departure.
The disciplinary case was referred to the Disciplinary Investigation Commission of the Portuguese Football Federation. The federation has not yet announced its final decision.
