The US-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated that military casualties in the Russia-Ukraine war have exceeded 2 million.
According to the report, since February 2022, between 400,000 and 450,000 soldiers on the Russian side have lost their lives. Total Russian losses (dead, wounded and missing) were calculated at 1.4 million.
On the Ukrainian front, it was stated that between 125,000 and 150,000 soldiers died and between 525,000 and 625,000 were wounded.
CSIS pointed out that the death toll Russia has suffered in Ukraine is four times the total American deaths in all wars the US has participated in since World War II. Similarly, this figure is more than nine times the total death toll Russia has suffered in all conflicts since World War II.
In a previous report published by the center in January, it was predicted that total military casualties could reach 1.8 million and hit 2 million in the spring. At that time, it was estimated that Russia had suffered 1.2 million casualties (up to 325,000 dead) and Ukraine 500,000–600,000 casualties (up to 140,000 dead).
Since the beginning of the war, Russia has taken control of approximately 19 percent of Ukraine's territory, including Crimea. While mutual attacks have intensified recently, international efforts have failed to secure a ceasefire.
