Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis stated after the 36th NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government in Ankara that they will not contribute to the 70 billion euro package committed for military equipment, aid, and training support for Ukraine.
Saying, “We will not contribute to this amount,” Babis stated that Europe should focus especially on defense against ballistic missiles. The prime minister said that the real problem is these missiles.
Noting that the Czech Republic will allocate 2 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) to defense next year, not this year, Babis said, “We will do our best this year as well, I am not denying that, but I do not think it is realistic.”
Babis said that because the Czech Republic is the country that allocates the least share of GDP to defense within NATO, he was the last person to speak at the meeting.
In the 36th NATO Summit Final Declaration, it was stated that the allies committed 70 billion euros for military equipment, aid, and training support for Ukraine for 2026, and confirmed as a sovereign commitment to maintain at least the same level of support in 2027.
