Datça will host different interpretations of jazz with the DatJazz Festival, which is being held for the first time this year. Organized by e. T. C. Events/collective with the support of the Muğla Governor's Office, Datça District Governor's Office and Datça Municipality, the festival will meet music lovers in the historic setting of the Mediterranean from August 19 to 23.
Festival Program Director Ülker Uncu stated that the event was initiated under the leadership of jazz enthusiast Ertan Tezcan, and the team expanded with the participation of Sıraç Aksoy and Ece Dönmez. She said they carried out an intensive preparation process throughout the winter to create a sustainable and unique jazz scene in Datça.
Uncu emphasized that the main reason for choosing Datça is that it is one of the most authentic spots in the Mediterranean, saying, "With its nature, history and cultural values, Datça offers a perfect meeting point for the Mediterranean music culture that we consider in its broadest scope."
Drawing attention to Datça's multi-layered past, Uncu said:
Datça's history bears the traces not of a single civilization, but of many successive cultures: the Carians, Dorians, Lydians, Persians, Hellenistic kingdoms, Romans, Byzantium, and finally the Seljuk, Ottoman and Republican heritage. This layered past has given the region an identity that easily engages with outside voices and carries multiculturalism in its very nature.
Uncu stated that they designed the festival program to reflect this multicultural musical heritage, and that they conceived DatJazz as a gathering open to improvisation and new sounds. She noted that they will give special place to women artists, cultural figures in Datça, and young jazz musicians in the region.
Program and Participants
The festival will kick off with a concert by ÜÇ on August 19, and continue with Melina Vlachos on August 20, NAKED and Jülide Özçelik on August 21, Elina Duni Quartet on August 22, and Ada Sanlıman Quartet on August 23. DJ Barthez will also accompany the program with performances throughout the festival.
Additionally, on the mornings of August 22 and 23, "Jazz at Breakfast" events at Kairos Valley will feature İmge Mıngıroğlu and Buse Benol. As part of the festival, discussions on Turkish jazz history and current festivals will also be held with the participation of music writers Özge Ç. Denizci and Tayfun Polat.
Long-Term Goals and Tickets
Ülker Uncu stated that they aim to make DatJazz a regular and reliable event, and that over time the festival will contribute to the local economy and bring vitality to the tourism season. However, she added that they see this not as a promise from the first year, but as a goal they will work on patiently.
Uncu said that in the coming years they aim to carry out joint programs with the Turkey Jazz Network, the Europe Jazz Network and festivals in North Africa. "For us, location alone is not a criterion; we want to be a reliable and continuous stakeholder within these networks," she said.
Festival tickets are on sale through Biletix, Biletinial and Bubilet platforms.
