A forest fire that began Friday in the Hautes Fagnes nature reserve in eastern Belgium remains out of control. The area affected by the flames in Liège Province has exceeded 2,700 hectares.
Firefighting efforts are being conducted from the air and on the ground. Numerous fire crews from different parts of the country have been dispatched to the area, while soldiers, police officers and farmers are also taking part in the operation.
European Union mechanism activated
After the flames spread rapidly, Belgium activated the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. Under the mechanism, three helicopters and two amphibious aircraft were sent to the fire zone.
Although the fire has not yet been brought under control, it has become the largest forest fire in Belgium's history. The blaze has reportedly surpassed the scale of the fire that affected approximately 1,400 hectares in 2011.
Evacuations ordered in residential areas
As the flames approached residential areas, authorities ordered the evacuation of residents in some parts of the municipalities of Waimes and Bütgenbach as a safety precaution. The nearest sports hall was opened to accommodate those evacuated.
Residents were advised to keep their doors and windows tightly closed, while some roads in the surrounding area were also closed to traffic.
