Çaykur Rizespor started the match strongly and came close to scoring through Laçi in the 3rd minute. Laçi met Ahmed Kutucu's pass from the right side of the penalty area, but goalkeeper Ederson denied his shot.
Fenerbahçe took the lead in the 12th minute. Kerem Aktürkoğlu received Guendouzi's pass and sent the ball to Asensio. Asensio's shot took a deflection off Mithat Pala before finding the net to make it 1-0.
Çaykur Rizespor had an opportunity to equalize through Olawoyin in the 27th minute. Olawoyin received the ball in the penalty area after an attack down the left flank, but Sow made a last-ditch intervention on his shot. Ederson collected the ball.
Fenerbahçe also came close to extending its lead later in the first half. In the 29th minute, Kerem Aktürkoğlu found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Fofana after Guendouzi's pass, but he could not convert the chance.
Chances at both ends in the second half
Early in the second half, Fofana saved Kerem Aktürkoğlu's shot after he received Asensio's pass on the left side of the penalty area. Çaykur Rizespor responded in the 52nd minute when Olawoyin fired a powerful shot from just outside the penalty arc, but the ball went narrowly wide.
The home side came close again in the 58th minute. Olawoyin, set up by Sow, saw his shot cleared from in front of goal by Ake with a header. Ederson then denied Mithat Pala's effort from the right side of the penalty area in the 62nd minute.
Fenerbahçe came close to a second goal through Greenwood in the 73rd minute, but Fofana turned the ball behind for a corner. Ederson also dealt with Doicaru's shot for Çaykur Rizespor in the 78th minute.
Fenerbahçe settled the result late on
The yellow-and-navy side doubled its lead in the 83rd minute. Oğuz Aydın won the ball as Çaykur Rizespor's defense tried to clear it forward and passed to İrfan Can Kahveci. Shooting from outside the penalty area on the right, İrfan Can Kahveci sent the ball into the corner of the net.
Fenerbahçe made it 3-0 in the 87th minute. Lukaku received the ball on the penalty arc and played it to Oğuz Aydın, who was entering the penalty area. Oğuz Aydın's shot hit the post before going into the net.
The match ended with Fenerbahçe winning 3-0.
Kartal: I am happy to win at a difficult venue
Fenerbahçe head coach İsmail Kartal said after the match that they had analyzed Çaykur Rizespor since the beginning of the week and prepared for the game accordingly.
Describing Çaykur Rizespor as a good and young team, Kartal said the opponent created scoring opportunities during the match. He said Fenerbahçe started well and scored, adding that he asked his players to play further forward and apply pressure in the second half.
Kartal said their changes helped them make it 3-0 and added that they had failed to convert two or three clear chances. He said Çaykur Rizespor had at least three or four clear opportunities as well, and stated that he was happy to beat a good team at a difficult venue and congratulated his players.
Uçar: We did not lose the game in terms of play, but we could not get the result
Çaykur Rizespor head coach Recep Uçar said after the match that they had prepared well and wanted to make a good start at home after the international break.
Describing Fenerbahçe as a strong team with high individual quality, Uçar said the opponent had many players capable of shooting from midfield, through central attacks and from outside the penalty area. Uçar said his team had played with pressure early on, taken shots and won most of the individual duels.
Uçar said Çaykur Rizespor had not played the final passes or taken the final shots well enough in attack, describing the missed chances as unfortunate for his team. He said they had taken risks in the second half and played with intense pressure and one-on-one matchups, adding that their shortcomings in making the final decisions were the team's main problem.
Uçar said they could have won the second ball before the first goal and had occasionally allowed transition opportunities in the second half. Nevertheless, he argued that his team had been one of the sides that challenged Fenerbahçe until the 83rd minute, and named Ederson, Skriniar, Kante and Ake among Fenerbahçe's best-performing players.
Uçar said he was pleased with his players' effort, desire and commitment to the game plan, adding that they had played another match at home in which they did not lose in terms of play but could not get the result. He noted that Fenerbahçe had greater individual quality and more strength on the bench, but said he did not regard that as an excuse.
Recalling that Çaykur Rizespor had earned points at Kadıköy last season, Uçar said he could apply a similar plan if the same match were played again. He said they had lost not because of their plan or strategy, but because of individual errors, choices in the attacking area and finishing, adding that Fenerbahçe goalkeeper Ederson had had a good match.
