Fires broke out in forested and grassland areas across different parts of Greece. The fires occurred in Agios Georgios on the island of Corfu, Simandra in Halkidiki province, Krania in Grevena province and Diminio in Corinth province.
The Greek Fire Service tackled the fires on the ground. Aircraft and helicopters also provided aerial support for the firefighting efforts.
Orange alert issued over fire risk
Greece’s General Secretariat for Civil Protection announced that the fire risk would remain high in many parts of the country the following day due to weather conditions.
Fire risk on the island of Crete and in areas in the southeastern Aegean Sea would reach the second-highest level, orange alert. Citizens were urged to avoid any actions that could cause a fire.
An earlier announcement had said that an orange alert would be in effect in Attica, including Athens, Central Greece, the North Aegean and South Aegean regions, and the Peloponnese. It had also announced that fire risk on the island of Crete and the islands of the South Aegean would remain at the highest level, red alert.
