A forest fire broke out yesterday evening in the Oraiokastro area near the Greek city of Thessaloniki. The flames quickly spread to a recycling plant and a textile factory.
The Greek Fire Service announced that the forest fire has been largely brought under control and that efforts are now focused on the factory and the plant.
160 firefighters and aircraft respond
The fire is being tackled by 160 firefighters, five ground teams and 52 vehicles. With the support of many volunteers, two firefighting planes and two helicopters joined the operation at first light.
Toxic smoke covers the city
Officials said thick black smoke rising from the recycling plant covered much of Thessaloniki. The smoke spread over an area wider than 20 kilometers, and the smell of burnt plastic was felt across the city.
Due to the possible toxic effects of the smoke, residents were urged to keep their windows closed and avoid going outside unless necessary. The elderly, children and those with respiratory conditions were asked to be particularly careful.
