The Portuguese Football Federation announced on Friday the appointment of Georgi Jesus as the new head coach of the senior national team on a four-year contract. The 71-year-old Jesus takes over from Spanish manager Roberto Martinez.
Significant achievements in his career
Jesus, whose career began at Amora in 1989, has managed Fenerbahçe in Turkey, Al Hilal and Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, Flamengo in Brazil, and Braga, Benfica and Sporting Lisbon in Portugal. With Flamengo he won the Brazilian league, Copa Libertadores and South American Super Cup, while with Benfica he claimed three Portuguese league titles. His move to Sporting Lisbon caused a major stir in Portuguese football as he arrived from arch-rivals Benfica.
Aim to defend Nations League title and reach 2030
Jesus's main objectives include defending the UEFA Nations League title won in 2025, and achieving success at EURO 2028 and especially the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco.
Martinez era ended in World Cup last 16
Portugal exited the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, in the last 16 against Spain. Mikel Moreno's goal in the 90+1st minute was the only score of the match. Following this defeat, Roberto Martinez stepped down from his post.
The Portuguese national team's social media account shared a post saying, "A new journey begins today. Welcome to our national team, Mr. Georgi Jesus."
