Greek F-16 fighter jet catches fire during emergency landing, pilot survives
A Greek F-16 fighter jet making an emergency landing at Zakynthos International Airport caught fire due to a landing gear malfunction. The fire was quickly brought under control and the pilot escaped unharmed.
A Hellenic Air Force F-16 fighter jet caught fire after making an emergency landing at Zakynthos International Airport on Thursday afternoon.
According to initial reports, the aircraft, which was on a training flight, was forced to make an emergency landing due to a technical malfunction in its landing gear. Flames erupted from the underside of the aircraft immediately after landing.
Footage shared on social media showed fire crews quickly intervening and bringing the fire under control in a short time.
An official statement from the Hellenic Air Force said the pilot was in good health and was not injured in the incident. The statement added that the aircraft belonged to the 335th Squadron and operated within the 116th Combat Wing, having taken off from Araxos Air Base.
The emergency landing took place at 1:45 p.m. local time, and an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the accident.
