Heavy downpours hit London, the capital of England, after a notably dry period lasting about 58 days.
Thunderstorms and heavy rain were seen across the city on the night of June 22, 2026. London then experienced a prolonged dry spell with little or no rainfall.
Drought spread across the country
England experienced five heatwaves this year, while a lack of rainfall across much of the country led to exceptional drought conditions. July 2026 was recorded as the driest month in the country since measurements began.
Drought was declared across 71.3% of England. The affected areas included all of London as well as Wales.
Rainfall reached 32 millimeters per hour in some areas
After green spaces in London turned yellow because of the drought, significant rainfall was recorded in the morning, 58 days later.
According to the UK Met Office's rainfall monitoring system, heavy rain began across the city from 3:00 a.m. Rainfall intensity reached 32 millimeters per hour in some areas.
Rainfall is expected to intensify on Thursday. Dry, compacted soil may struggle to absorb heavy downpours, increasing the risk of localized flooding and surface water flooding.
