İnönü University Turgut Özal Medical Center Liver Transplant Institute in Malatya has performed the world's first simultaneous eight-way cross liver transplant. The operation was carried out by a team led by Prof. Dr. Sezai Yılmaz.
During the matching process at the center, a pool of 24 patients and 29 donors was evaluated. The team concluded that this model could save three patients simultaneously and decided to proceed with the eight-way cross transplant.
The eight-way cross transplant relies on establishing suitable donor-recipient matches through multiple transplant chains. This method offers a new option for patients who were previously waiting due to compatibility issues.
The operation marks a significant medical achievement centered in Turkey in the field of liver transplantation. It is expected to be regarded as a new milestone within cross transplant models.
